Every June, first graders from Pleasant View Elementary School hike the Pedlar Riparian Trail on the property of St. Luke's Historic Episcopal Church in Pedlar Mills, Amherst County VA. They wade in the Pedlar River to explore what's living there, and they learn how important the riparian buffer (streamside vegetation) is to the health of the river ecosystem. The trail was established by the Friends of the Pedlar River in 2003, thanks to St. Luke's Historic Episcopal Church, the Pedlar River Institute, the Pedlar Ruritan Club, and the R.E. Lee Soil and Water Conservation District.
