A watershed education project located in the Pedlar River watershed of western Amherst County, VA.
The Friends of the Pedlar River have been monitoring macro invertebrate populations at several sites in the Pedlar River watershed (Amherst County) since 1997. Per year, they average 10 Critter Hunts involving approximately 250 participants. They also direct schoolyard environmental education programs and an annual Critter Hunt field trip for Amherst Middle School’s seventh graders.
In 2003, in partnership with the Pedlar Ruritan Club and the Robert E. Lee Soil and Water Conservation District, Pedlar River Institute created the environmentally friendly Pedlar Riparian Trail, a nature trail and a Pedlar River field trip destination for school and community groups.
"After rubbing the bottoms of rocks and doing the "river dance" to help stir up the organisms, they removed the net and took it back to shore so they could study and classify the organisms. It turned out many students found a number of stoneflies, caddisflies, mayflies, and crayfish."
